I have been using MS Word in school for quite sometime. I believe it was in high school where I had to get DIT certified and we learned a lot about the software. I never had a problem using it, I found it quite easy to learn your way around. However, for some reason I tend to gravitate more towards Google docs. I think my grade school teachers pushed us to use Google docs for a lot of assignments and it just kind of stuck. While MS Word is easy to navigate, I think Google docs might be easier and has some features that MS word lacks.

After browsing through the ISTE Standards for Educators, I think the standard most meaningful to me is 2.1 Learner. I think learning is never ending, there are always opportunities to gain or strengthen your knowledge. I think it is important for educators to learn about new practices and acquire knowledge and experience from others to apply to their own classrooms. It is good to get involved in PLNs as it is a great way to make connections and explore different practices.

I do agree with the term "digital native" for todays youth. Digital natives are "native speakers" of digital technologies. Most of our youth know how to use a variety of technology from a very young age. You see toddlers with iPad and iPhone. They don't know how to add or subtract yet but they sure know their way around a tablet. When compared to digital immigrants, for example, my parents, who did not grow up with technology, you can definitely see some differences. I think digital immigrants tend to use technology less than digital natives, more like when they need to. To send an email, a text, or make a call. Where as I think a lot of digital natives are critically online and spend most of their time scrolling through tik-tok, Instagram reels, etc. Another difference is their digital competency, digital immigrants often need help navigating their way around a smartphone, whereas digital natives know how to use all its features and shortcuts. I expect this difference to carry on between me and my future students, as technology is always expanding and evolving. There will always be new things to learn.

  1. I agree with your first paragraph. I had to get certified in Word when I took DIT, but I would still always choose google docs. I assume it's because it's simpler and is used more readily in the classroom.
